PAC Grant Thornton Firm Visit 2024

On 26th August 2024, the Professional Accountancy Centre (PAC) organized a firm visit to Grant Thornton Malaysia PLT in Kuala Lumpur, offering students an invaluable opportunity to explore the professional world. The event, held from 8:00 am to 11:00 am, was attended by 33 ACCA students and managed by 7 dedicated committee members. The primary objective of this visit was to provide students with a firsthand look at the industry, enhance their understanding of the professional environment, and broaden their perspectives through exposure to various workforces.

The day began at 7:20 am with participants gathering at the atrium for registration and breakfast. A brief session outlining the event’s agenda was held, followed by a group photo to capture the start of the visit. The group departed from UOW Malaysia at 7:45 am, with the journey taking approximately an hour. Upon arrival, a headcount was conducted to ensure everyone was present. The firm’s location, behind a hotel, required us to use the lift at the back, guided by the hotel guards.

Upon entering Grant Thornton’s main office, we were warmly welcomed by Ms. Chen Vin Dee from the Talent and Culture department. She introduced us to the firm and ensured we were comfortably seated. We were each provided with a gift bag featuring the Grant Thornton logo, which included a company pamphlet, a book, and a pen. The visit began with an engaging presentation by Mr. Albert, who provided insightful details about the company’s background and its management structure. His presentation was both informative and enriching, offering valuable insights into the operations of Grant Thornton.

Following the introduction, we moved on to a networking session in the company pantry, where we had the chance to interact with senior managers and junior staff. The casual setting, which included light breakfast and refreshments, mirrored the Malaysian culture of “lepak,” blending social interaction with professional networking. This session was particularly beneficial, allowing students to make connections that could prove valuable in their future careers. The networking session lasted for about an hour, during which participants gained practical advice and insights from experienced professionals.

The visit continued with a tour of the firm, led by the Talent and Culture department. The open-plan office layout fostered a sense of collaboration and transparency, embodying the firm’s commitment to a dynamic and inclusive workplace. The use of natural light and modern design elements created a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere that left a lasting impression on the students, inspiring many of them to aspire to work in such a progressive environment.
